The Chinese American entrepreneur Yue Sai Kan, Oprah’s equivalent in China, learned this the hard way when her foray into the home decor business failed despite her string of successes. This is her advice as written in the book “What I Know Now About Success: Letters from Extraordinary Women to Their Younger Selves“:
… You are starting this business too big. The concept of branding the home-decor market is smart, and it’s so similar to what you did in cosmetics that you’re overlooking some important differences. In cosmetics you can make a variety of products in one factory. But in home decoration you will have more than 150 vendors from ten countries making 3,000 products. The operations are simply more complex than anything you’ve done before. It would be better to start small and grow.
